Warfarin works by preventing the vitamin K dependent production of the clotting factors. Warfarin prevents the production of these clotting factors by inhibiting the producction of vitamin K. Without these clotting factors fibrinogen cannot be converted into fibrin and blood clots are therefore less likely to occur. Coumadin (warfarin Sodium) is a blood thinner. YOu must have your blood thinning time PPT regularly monitored while taking coumadin and your dosage should be changed regularly by your physician.
